WANTED: MYSTERY SHOPPERS
Have you thought of becoming a mystery shopper (also known as secret shopper)? Secret shoppers became a resource for companies going back many years now.

Secret shoppers are people who are hired to visit a place of business and critique the service, product and overall experience for the benefit of the company. Anyone who is over the age of 18 can work as a secret shopper and make some income. Sometimes this will be an actual paycheck but often you are paid through reimbursement and simply get to keep the product you have purchased.

If you are considering applying for work as a secret shopper, use caution! There are many scams on the Internet that seem to make a lot of promises but ask that you pay a fee for registration. You should never pay a fee for this service! There are companies that will give you access to lists without ever charging you. Although these companies are legitimate and free, you will likely be asked to pay for your purchases upfront and then have to wait a period of as much as a month before you are reimbursed. If this is the case, be sure to research the company with the Better Business Bureau and the Mystery Shopping Providers Association before putting up any of your own money.

As with any other business venture, the best way to succeed at secret shopping is to treat it like a personal business. Be sure that you are doing a good job if you want more work from a company. Writing precise and informative evaluations, submitting your work promptly, having excellent availability and following the guidelines you are given, will all go far in turning your secret shopping venture into a nice supplement to your income. Be prepared to work your way up. Just like with any job, you will need to prove yourself before you are selected to take on bigger and better shops. Be professional, dependable organized and objective in your evaluations.

As you build credibility, you may be selected more often but you should realize that if you live in an area that doesn’t get many shopping requests, you may never be able to make a solid profit as a secret shopper. Secret shopping companies usually do not pay for mileage and most will not withhold taxes.

Be prepared to work as an independent contractor

When you work for a secret shopping company, you are an independent contractor and are not guaranteed work. In most cases, the level of income you will receive from secret shopping is supplementary at best. If, however, you are someone who enjoys shopping or eating out, secret shopping may be a great way to get some freebees and have a little fun.
