Starting an Accounting Business
How to start your own accounting businessThe most common problem cited by those seeking to start their own business is that they don’t have the capital necessary to get their business off and running. There are loans and grants available, but applying for them can be difficult and time-consuming. One way to avoid the entire problem is to pick a business that doesn’t have a high start-up cost. The perfect opportunity for minimizing costs? Starting an accounting business.
An accountant needs a computer and the appropriate software, and a place to work – and that’s it. Obviously, you need to have the background knowledge – you actually have to be an accountant – but this is surprisingly easy to learn. If you have training in this area, then you can start your own business today, without a great deal of startup capital.
Making the transition to your new career doesn’t have to be torture. Set a target date for your accounting business to launch, and start saving your money (to cover the inevitable minor expenses) and developing your client list. Everyone you’ve ever done business with is a potential candidate for accounting services – everybody has taxes to pay, and all businesses need accountants in one form or another. Don’t be shy about putting your services out there among your circle of friends – you may just find that even those who already have an accountant would rather have someone they personally know and trust.
Keeping costs down will be key to your success. If you can set up an office in your home (in a room that you use ONLY for your accounting business) then you can write off a portion of your rent or mortgage and utility payments. Plus, you won’t be incurring an additional expense by opening an office. One of the nice things about accounting, or any service business, is that you have no inventory – just your office equipment and computer.
Building a client base is the next step. Freelance accountants will tell you that getting your first job is always a challenge – people want someone with experience. But don’t worry – once you get established, you’ll have more work than you know what to do with. To get started, look for other small businesses through freelance websites like Elance.com. These early jobs might not pay much – but you’ll quickly develop a following and a reputation based on your skills and performance. Knock your clients out with your great attitude and service – they will remember you.
Advertising is one way of attracting new customers. Online ads can be reasonably priced, and if you use a service like Google AdWords you can set the exact budget you want to spend. In order to attract business online, you will need a web presence yourself – you can get a nice business site for yourself without spending a fortune, so don’t blow all your savings on a fancy site with bells and whistles. Your potential clients just need to be reassured that you’re a real business with a real service and not some online scam.
