Just like any Internet-based business, it is important for eBay sellers to promote their products in as many ways as possible. The addition of a personal website to your eBay empire is a great way to see additional profits and gain substantial repeat business.

Setting up a web page is very simple and fairly cheap. By using on-line tools, you can launch and maintain a basic page for under $100 per year.

While web-hosting companies often include basic page builders for beginners, the type of page that you can make with one of these is very simple and may not suit your requirements when it comes to e-commerce.

While it may seem expensive to hire a professional or take a class to learn it for yourself, you may find that you save more money by getting your site up fast with the help of a professional. Since sales and invoicing are going to be an important part of your business, having your site working correctly right off the bat will save you a great deal of headache later on, therefore, making the investment worthwhile.

eBay has a lot of rules regarding promotion of off-eBay websites but once you are aware of them it is relatively simple to use your personal site to enhance your product and auctions. eBay will not allow you to list a remote link in your auction pages but it will allow you to do so in your "About Me" page.

Find reasons to send interested buyers to your "About Me" page and list your home page link there to direct them to additional items. Depending on your product, it may be wise to only sell certain items on eBay and reserve related items for sale on your site where you will not have to give eBay a cut of your profits.

Through research you should be able to find what types of items do best on eBay and what types of items may be best saved for sale off eBay.

Items like e-books tend to do very poorly in auctions but if you have movable products related to your e-book you can gain a 100% profit on e-book sales resulting from buyers who found you on your related auction page. Encourage buyers to sign up for a newsletter on your site, which can notify them of non-auction items that you are listing.

Using a personal page in tandem with your eBay auctions is a great double-handshake for your business. Not only can you direct buyers from eBay to your home site, but you can also use additional advertising to draw traffic to your auctions. Listing sites like Craig's List do not allow you to advertise eBay auctions in their classifieds, but you can list a link to your business page. There are many other free advertising opportunities on-line in which you can promote your business from both ends.

Steps to Starting a Website

1. Secure a domain name. Sites such as GoDaddy.com are inexpensive when securing domain names.

2. Once you've selected a domain name, purchase hosting services. Not familiar with the concept of domains names and hosting? If your domain name is your "house," hosting services is the land your house sits on. Much as your domain name, GoDaddy.com offers inexpensive hosting services with PHP, ASP, and FrontPage Extension support.

3. Purchase inexpensive website design software, such as FrontPage. As your web design skills broaden, other website development software such as Dreamweaver are viable options. You might have luck finding website templates to help build web pages. If all else fails, research and select a website designer. It's better to build to your own websites, in my opinion, primarily because your website is built free, but if you're concerned about quality, hiring a professional website developer and designer is a good choice.
